Another AWESOME Kancman in the books. Mother Nature was much kinder this year and it made for a fantastic day with pretty epic autumn colors. Thanks to everyone who made it out this year for making it a blast, and keeping the momentum going for what will hopefully become an annual classic. See you next year!
This year’s Kancman Triathlon is taking place on Saturday September 28th at 8:00am.
If you’re unfamiliar with the race, this is a a very informal event. Registration is free, and it’s a race in the old school sense that it’s just a bunch of people getting together and seeing who can blast the course the fastest. There’s no obstacles, zombies, paint-ball guns or any other gimmicky shit. It’s just a self-supported laid back race over some of the most beautiful challenging terrain in New England. There’s no aid stations or course support, and no sag-wagon (unless you hitch a ride). You’re expected to carry your own nutrition and a flat kit. There are a few gas stations along the route, and several parks where you can fill up water bottles. We expect you be familiar with the route since it won’t be marked and folks will not be waiting. Consequently, we advocate riding using the ‘buddy system’ (drafting is allowed) and bringing a fully charged cell phone, map, and lots of calories.
None of the legs are mandatory – feel free to adjust things based on what your training or fitness dictates.
RACE DAY INFO
We’ll meet at the Echo Lake Parking lot in Franconia at 7:15-7:30 am, and be down at the beach for last minute instructions by 7:45 am. It’s right off Exit 34C off of 93N. Can’t miss it. Exact location: 44.177918,-71.696404.
Swim – If it’s exceptionally cold or crazy windy like last year, we’ll walk around and just swim across once (750m). If the weather is good, we’ll go ahead with the out and back swim.
– The run course is again three counterclockwise laps around the lake to make it exactly 5 miles. It’s a very obvious route if you look at the map here (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3176795
Sometimes there are portapotties/bathrooms open at the lake, sometimes not. It’s a gamble you’ll have to take. Bring some tp and plan to utilize the expansive natural surroundings if necessary.
Please remember, this is not a sanctioned race and as such the organizers assume no responsibility or liability for anything that happens before, during or after the race. Think of this as a normal training day, and by participating you accept any and all known or unknown risks. If you have not done so, please read our liability waiver.
If weather is looking really bad for Saturday (100% Rain/Snow and <50 degrees), but great for Sunday (0% precipitation, >60 degrees)…. we’ll probably push it to Sunday. We’ll make that call no later than 9 am Friday 9/27.
If you have not done so already, please shoot us an email and let us know if you think you can make it.
Kancman will be taking place Saturday September 28th, 2013. It will be a great workout for the fall IM crowd, or a great way to round out the season with a beautiful and challenging race. Foliage should be peaking again this year, and it’s a week earlier in hopes of ensuring a bit warmer weather. More updates and email blasts to follow!
Thank you to everyone who showed up and raced the inaugural Kancman Triathlon. We had some truly hard-core efforts out there through some frigid and choppy waters, a challenging bike course, and a very wet run. We hope you all enjoyed the experience and will join us again next year. Next year we will have more time to coordinate the event and provide some new and exciting features!
Beer for everyone over the age of 21 on race day!!
